What is an anxiety disorder-?

An anxiety disorder is a mental health condition characterized by excessive and persistent feelings of anxiety, fear, and worry. Unlike normal feelings of stress or occasional anxiousness, anxiety disorders involve intense and chronic symptoms that significantly impact a person’s daily life, relationships, and overall well-being.

There are several types of anxiety disorders, including:

1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): GAD involves excessive worry and anxiety about various aspects of life, such as work, health, finances, or everyday situations. The worry is difficult to control and often accompanied by physical symptoms like restlessness, irritability, muscle tension, and sleep disturbances

2. Panic Disorder: Panic disorder is characterized by recurring and unexpected panic attacks, which are sudden episodes of intense fear or discomfort. Panic attacks can involve physical symptoms like rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, and a sense of impending doom.

3. Social Anxiety Disorder (Social Phobia): Social anxiety disorder involves intense fear or anxiety about social situations, including the fear of being embarrassed, judged, or humiliated. It leads to avoidance of social interactions or situations and can significantly impact a person’s ability to engage in social activities or form relationships.

4. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): While OCD is classified as an anxiety disorder, it is characterized by the presence of obsessions (intrusive and unwanted thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviours or mental acts) aimed at reducing anxiety. OCD often involves repetitive rituals, checking behaviours, or excessive cleanliness.

5. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): PTSD can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It involves re-experiencing the trauma through intrusive memories or nightmares, avoidance of triggers associated with the trauma, negative changes in mood and thinking, and heightened arousal or vigilance.

Anxiety disorders are very much treatable if these anxiety disorders are treated by a well-trained professional. Counselling, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and prescribed medications are proven helpful sources to treat anxiety.
